Posted September 09, 2018 06:24:24Attorney General Xavier Becerra, a Republican, was charged with fraud, conspiracy and perjury over the 2014 killing of an elderly woman in San Francisco, and his office has faced mounting criticism over the years for its lack of transparency.
A lawsuit brought by the victim’s family alleges that the attorney’s office misled them about the victim and her injuries.
The state of California’s attorney general, Xavier Becerras, is under fire for the murder of Maria L. Ortiz.
NBC 5’s Natalie Martinez reports.
(Published Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2018)Attorney General Becerras is charged with conspiracy and three counts of perjury.
His office says he committed perjury when he denied knowing that the victim died from injuries suffered in a traffic accident.
The charges stem from the 2016 fatal accident involving Ortiz and her daughter, who were driving the wrong way on a California highway when they collided head-on with a tractor-trailer.
The attorney’s campaign says Becerres office failed to properly investigate the accident, including the investigation into whether the truck driver was negligent in causing the crash.
In his statement, Becerrcas’ office says that the charges are false because he did not know the victim was in critical condition.
It says the victim, whose name has not been released, was hit and killed by a truck in an accident that happened in San Diego, and that Becerrras did not even know the truck was moving until after the collision.
The statement says Becerrras knew the trucker was not at fault, but it “further shows he acted in a manner that was in complete disregard of the facts of the case.”
A spokesman for Becerranas office says Becers office is cooperating with the investigation and will be releasing more information about the case at a later date.
The incident has also raised questions about how the attorney-general was chosen to lead the state.
In March, the San Francisco Examiner reported that Becerrases office had selected a former law enforcement officer to lead its public corruption investigation into the state’s public pension system.
The report also noted that the former officer, Paul O’Brien, who was later charged with racketeering and corruption, was the chief of staff for Becerrase’s predecessor, former Gov.
“The fact that he is now the chief law enforcement official in the state of CA, is alarming,” Becerrs spokeswoman said.
